Brookie streams

I know there are alot of pa and ny fishing people on this site and was just wondering what you think. This year i have fished some out of the way creeks and streams that have always held native brookies or wild trout but this year i have found no sign of anything ,not even insect life on some. Is the acid rain killing our creeks or is it something else
