This is a high floating imitation of the famed "October Caddis" Hatch on many Western rivers. I've been working on variations of this fly for several years. With the assistance of Yakima River gruide, Derek Young of Emerging Rivers Guide Service (Snoqaulmie, WA), I think we've got something good here. If you've never tied with closed cell foam, give it a try. It's a fun product with lots of options. Use this pattern for hoppers, stoneflies, and swallas too. With a few changes in color of foam, flash, thread, etc., it can be used for any number of big bugs. A great fly to use in a Hopper/Dropper rig because of it's floatation.

Update- Feburary 2011

This fly pattern was picked up by Orvis and can be purchased online, through their catalog or at your local Orvis Fly shop.

Rips lip on the Yakima River

Dave's got a winner here - he worked hard to get my feedback into this final version, a killer pattern for fall caddis.
