I was frustrated by bass and panfish that were busting schools of tiny minnows along the shoreline vegetation of one of my favorite rivers. The fish would bust minnows. I'd cast and come up empty time after time.

Finally, I decided to create a small minnow imitation. After several prototypes, I finally came up with a fly that I called the Myakka Minnow. I used it the first time on the Myakka River near my house and caught fish. Hence, the name.

It's a great fly for bluegill, shellecracker, bass, tilapia, crappie and stumpknocker. Although I tie it mostly on a No. 10-12 hook, it can be tied on larger hooks and used in salt water. I've taken lots of snook, spotted seatrout, bluefish, ladyfish, jack crevalle, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, mangrove snapper, tripletail and other species.

Key is to let it sink and fish it slow.
