Tying Hopper legs?

Postby tgoodwater2002 » Tue Nov 18, 2008 5:29 am

I have been tying hopper legs with peasant tail fibers by hand. Is there an easy way to tie the legs in a knot?

Howdy,

I\'ve often wondered the same thing. I don\'t tie many hopper patterns myself, and when I do, I usually just put rubber legs on them. I have seen a product named \"legs on a stick\" at a fly shop. It\'s a Ringneck Pheasant Tail Feather with the legs pre-tied and left on the feather stem. It looks like a pretty cool product. You can just eye-ball it and clip off the legs you need from each side. I\'m not sure how they do it though.

I\'ve got several RN Pheasant Tail feathers around that I can experiment with. I\'ll give it a shot and let you know how it turns out.

Tight lines!

I did figure it out! There is a tool called the leg tying tool. There is also a really good article in the Fly Tying Magazine this month. Here is a pic too. Image

Hi guys.
We call that a latch hook over here, to be honest I usually just knot them by hand, but as i get older i\'m getting less dextrous, its when I do something like tying knots in feather fibre thats it shows. I was thinking of a crochet hook ??? But when I tried it, it took me longer with it than without, it was the second knot every time.. I shall have to persevere with a hook of some sort or in time buy the ready mades.....I do have another idea but i\'m still working on it...

Si.............

PS.. Carp anglers use em for pulling their links through Boilies when baiting up.....

I use it all the time. In fact I just tied up a whole pheasant tail in hopper legs with that tool. I find it to work really slick. I love it. :silly:

How are you going to see my hopper\'s when you are not in the terrestrial swap? I am so dissapointed. I am in the steelhead swap with ya, but I am tying the babine special and it doesn\'t have any hopper legs. We will have to work something out. Maybe you will get in on the next swap.;)
